The "Grudgingly Good" rating indicates that I think the story is well written, but that I find some of the elements in the story so disturbing that if I were to review the story based solely on my personal tastes I would give it a "Not Good" rating. The "Not Good" rating indicates that I do not like the story. ***** REVIEWS ----- Rogue Review No. 239 - October 26, 1998 Orange County Babylon (Part 5 of 8) by MichaelD38 M/F, F/F, Teen Length: 17,100 words Rating: N/A SUMMARY Jack gets closer to Kelly and Becky, Karen gets sick, and Summer and Jack experience some ups and downs. COMMENTARY I'm starting to run out of things to say. The story progresses nicely, yada, yada, yada. I am starting to think that stretching the story out over such a long period of time was not such a good idea. There is a lot that happens in this novel, but at the same time the action is somewhat cyclical. Things are up for Jack, then they are down, then they are up again, etc. This is a well written, enjoyable, occasionally arousing novel, it is just that I now remember why I usually stick to short stories. COMMENTARY This is a well written story. I like the interplay between Wanda and her lover, the narrator. What happens in this story feels like the tip of the iceberg. It could be the beginning or the ending of a longer work. It would not have to be a much longer work, but what happens before and/or after this story? I like what is here, but the story feels incomplete. COMMENTARY The buildup is adequate. The sex is hot. Like all the other parts in this series (Seasons), it is part of a larger story. The stories that comprise Seasons are: Part 1 - Hazy Shade of Winter Part 2 - Summertime Blues Part 3 - Season of the Witch Part 4 - April Showers Part 5 - The Cruelest Month Part 6 - The Real World Part 7 - A Time to Cast Away Stones SUMMARY Sam experiences some good times and some bad times in his romantic life. COMMENTARY The stories that make up this series are romantic and sexy. The drama in them reads more like melodrama. The characters are not especially deep. I preferred the earlier parts of this series, specifically parts 1, 2, and 4. The end of Part Seven was unsatisfying because it is unclear as to whether the author intended to continue the series or not. I did enjoy reading this series. I did find myself aroused by the sex, more often than not. COMMENTARY This story is weird. If you like the X-Files then you might like it. The focus in this story is quite often on sex, but there is a lot more to the story than just sex. COMMENTARY There is a lot that I like about this story. I like that the author does not focus on the sex, but on the seduction. I like that both characters are somewhat reluctant. On the other hand, I should probably be bothered by this story. What happens not only fits the legal definition of statutory rape, but also fits my own definition of pedophilia. If the teacher was a male and the student was a female, I would, most likely, have been bothered by this story. In summary, despite the pedophilia I really liked this story. COMMENTARY This story is funny. There is a lot of sex in it, but I think the author hoped to do more than just arouse the reader. COMMENTARY I do not usually read stories that are written in the second person, like this one is. There is not much of a plot, but the author does have a way with words. I like his descriptions and the details he chooses to include. Quite often he goes for what I consider to be the softer more intimate details, where other authors quite often choose the "sexier" and more vulgar details. COMMENTARY I really like this story. I like the characters. The plot is simple. The author does not try and do anything too extreme or drastic. This is just a very nice, soft, gentle, sex story.
