  SUMMARY

Ellie sleeps with Carl, her best friend's younger brother, after he 
produces an old IOU.


  COMMENTARY

This is really two stories, not one.  First, there is the story of 
how Ellie and Carl wind up sleeping together [Chapters 1-4].  
Second, there is the story of how Ellie comes to realize that she 
is more than just another pretty face [Chapters 5 & 6].

I liked the first "story" better than I did the second one.  It 
could have something to do with the fact that there is sex in the 
first "story" and only a mention of sex in the second "story".  I 
think there is more to it than that.  The first "story" seems to 
flow more smoothly.  The second "story" seems rushed.


  NOTE

This story takes place in the north of England.  The author 
includes a short glossary of terms that may be unfamiliar to 
Americans.  I found it very helpful.
