Chapter Seven
Tesholi's Girl
Plot Synopsis only
Tesholi takes Jaffa's hand and they dive under the water and come out in a small underground cave.
Jaffa is shown around, and she begins to learn the basic way of life and is very happy. She is content to live with these other strays for the rest of her life. They teach her a job and she learns very quickly.
Many days later there is an initiation ceremony. [If The 2cd Fall of the Kandic Amorians storyline is to be a prequel to this, then perhaps Sheshal should also still be a part of the community.]
Tesholi ask Jaffa if she would like to stay and be one of them, and Jaffa says she would. So there is a sexual related ceremony, where in they all exchange body juices, and get well inebriated. The next day Jaffa notices that she recognizes a distinctive smell about all the girls, which is rather pleasant and distinctive. Tesholi says that soon she will be able to distinguish each girl by smell as well as telling that they are members of the group.
As Jaffa learns more and more, she begins to see magic and is very interested in learning. She quickly learns every job she is shown (some are slightly magical in nature and she excels at these.)
When Tesholi's helper dies, Tesholi begins searching for a new one. This is a very prestigious and dangerous position as the helper accompanies Tesholi on her trips into the UnderCaves. Jaffa gets wind of the position and goes to Tesholi to ask for the position. Tesholi is pleased, as she has heard of Jaffa's talents. She lets Jaffa become her helper and student.
Jaffa makes every effort to be around Tesholi, and is allowed to do so. She suddenly gains much status and is treated much differently by the other strays and also by Tesholi, who begins to spend more time with her.
In casual conversation, Tesholi admits that she sometimes feels trapped. She can’t leave the strays alone or they’ll die, but sometimes she longs to leave and find her own type to live with.
Tesholi begins to teach Jaffa some of the techniques of magic, and is pleased to find that Jaffa learns very rapidly and is exceptionally gifted at it for a human. [Jaffa has always been sensitive to psychic phenomenon.] After awhile Tesholi takes Jaffa into the UnderCaves for a short trip, to get Jaffa used to the strangeness of the UnderCaves and to see how she handles the shifting world.
Soon they are venturing into the UnderCaves for several days at a time. Jaffa wears a saddlebag where Tesholi can put the things that she finds. Tesholi also carries a small backpack, but she must be free to climb and fight monsters; and her pack is quickly filled.
Jaffa is constantly asking questions and learning. Tesholi tells her history: about the Slarn attack on the Kandic hive and how she escaped and found her way to Eapar where she found and befriended a stray and eventually started the adopted "hive under the pond". Tesholi shows her many secrets, and wondrous things and tells her the history, oddities and importance of each. She shows Jaffa the HealStone, which she keeps only for the worst of emergencies.
One day, in casual conversation, Jaffa notices one of Tesholi’s fingers that looks deformed. When she asks about it, Tesholi tells her that she lost the finger during one of her adventures before settling down, and had experimentally used the HealStone to regenerate the finger. This sparks Jaffa's interest: she asks if Tesholi found out the secret of regeneration. Tesholi says yes, but explains that the size of HealStone that she has was just barely enough to regenerate her finger and that even so there was much scaring and the finger was not is useful as it once was. Jaffa asks if Tesholi could regenerate one of the stray’s legs if she had a large enough HealStone. Tesholi says such a thing would have to be done inside the Cavern of Youth itself, if it was possible at all, and that to get there would be prohibitively dangerous even for a person with legs, and especially for a Kandic-Amorian Alph, as the cavern is in the hive of the Slarn—the mortal enemy of the Kandic. [Perhaps a good place to recap a short version of The 2nd Fall storyline.]
Days pass, and Jaffa can't get the thought of the HealStone out of her mind.
