Living In the Nightmares’ Shadow

Chapter 1
Through the bathroom door she could still hear the noises’ of the equipment being assembled. Letting out a shaky sigh she looked at her trembling hands. Shutting her eyes, she let her head drop forward and gripped the sink tightly, trying to will herself calm.
After several minutes it was obvious that it wasn’t going to work. She was usually able to do a bit of meditation and restore some calm when stressed but it wasn’t working this time. Opening her eyes she looked at her reflection in the mirror and shook her head. “I hate doing interviews! Especially if they’re for television.” She said, looking at her reflection as though she expected it to nod sympathetically.
Normally she would foster out the publicity work to the others in the band since they weren’t bothered with it like she was. Being an intensely private person the thought of sitting down with someone and discussing her life outside the spotlight gave her the heebie-jeebies. Like most other famous people she had a great deal of intrusion in her private life from fans, paparazzi and the like, because of that she didn’t want any more of it from interviews. No matter what you say or talk about somehow or other it always seems to make you look like a narcissistic, clueless, shallow idiot.
This time, however, she couldn’t fob it off onto the other members of the band; it was something she alone had to handle. While it was purported to be an interview about her music and other projects she knew that it was going to touch on another area because of events unfolding now, ones that she was always uncomfortable talking about. It always triggered some very bad memories she hoped to forget. Although she didn’t like the idea of sitting down and dredging up the past the alternative, staying quiet, was a worse prospect from her point of view. There had been enough speculation and rumors, most of them inaccurate, that she felt she had to ‘set the record straight’ to nip it in the bud before it went any further.
Rather than go in blind and do the interview with someone she wasn’t sure about she had consented to do it with Rosie West. She had started out on a sitcom then ended up with her own talk show before moving into the area of celebrity news/interviews. They had met at several charity functions in the past so when it had come down to the fact she was going to have to talk to someone about things going on she got a hold of Rosie, setting up the interview. No, it wasn’t going to be easy to do but at least Rosie was known to show some tact and didn’t go for the kill and see how much blood she could spill.
Resigned to the task at hand, she sighed deeply then stood up straight, letting go of the sink, squared her shoulders then looked into the mirror intently. Staring into her reflections’ eyes she whispered, “No fear.” Slipping the mask of calm on her face, so her inner turmoil wasn’t visible, she whispered again, “No fear”
