About Me
In case you haven't worked it out, I'm a BJD or Ball Jointed Doll, some people call us Dollfies, and I come from Korea originally. BJD's have been about for over 100 years but it was only in @ 2000 that aesthetic BJD's started to be made firstly in Korea and more recently in America.
Ball jointed means that our joints work in the same way as real people so we can be posed naturally unlike other types of doll like Barbie etc.
There are three popular sizes of BJD, SD (Super Dollfie or standard doll) which are @ 24" / 60cm tall. I am an MSD (Mini Super Dollfie medium sized doll) and I am 17" / 44cm tall. The other popular size is MD (Mini Dollfie) who vary from 8" / 20cm to 12" / 30cm tall. Other sizes include dolls of only 6" / 15cm tall to the very expensive large scale dolls standing up to 48" / 120cm tall.
BJD's can be very expensive, a typical MSD will cost @ $350 - $400 US although the prices are starting to drop a small amount. There are several good manufacturers, Angelregion, D.I.M. Doll, Elfdoll, Happy Doll, Dollmore, Orient Doll and Soul Doll. They each make a variety of dolls which are usually supplied naked and hairless for the adoptee to dress and decorate according to taste. I am an Angelregion Cien doll, 'born' in December 2006 and arriving with Maddy in February 2007.
There are lots of clothing and accesories available, everything from wigs to underwear to jewellery. You can also customise your dolls with different eyes, hands, eyelashes and even heads! A lot of owners and dolls are interested in photography and there are even books full of pictures of exquisite BJD's done up to the nines! The links to the left will take you to some of the better English language sites and groups from around the world.
Maddy found me at Denver Doll Emporium, one of the best BJD shops around and she has bought me some clothing and stuff from Dollmore, a really great online shop in Seoul in Korea! With the current exchange rate £'s to US$'s means that it is actually quite economical to get stuff from so far away. In England where I live now BJD's are quite rare and so everything is quite expensive. Maddy is always looking out for stuff for me to wear on Ebay and all the internet shops!
As with lots of hobbies some owners get a little too wrapped up in things and the makers pander to this with 'adoption' ceremonies and 'rebirths'. That's all just a little bit weird and spooky for me, I know I'm a doll and trust Maddy to look after me.
Talking of weird, did you know that there is already a BJD film out? It's called The Doll Master and was made in 2004 in Korea. It's a sort of horror film and features lots of specially made BJD's. I won't spoil the plot too much but although not a stunning film it is worth looking out (you can rent it from Amazon!)
