About
I've always been fascinated by hypnosis - at the same time scared of and drawn to losing control, or controlling others in this way. Ego-loss feels like death, we can fear it and desire it at the same time. To eroticise it is a form of controlling this. If we could control someone elses ego-loss, we can control our own. If someone else takes control, we don't have to be afraid. This can also be internalised - in fantasy we are playing both sides at once, simultaneously living out our fear and defending against it.
I'm interested in the relationship of hypnotism to media, and the internet in particular, as machines of influence. We negotiate this invisible space as if travelling through our own subconscious. Suggestions are implanted deep inside us when we are in a very open state: searching, feeling dissociated from our bodies. The flickering computer screen helps our trance state and we lose our sense of time. I often wonder how this is affecting us...
