The Nature of Man

Synopsis: This story follows Eric Wagner on a psychological journey into his mind, body, and sexuality.

Where it came from: In May of 2003, I started to look back upon my life with an eye towards what had made me become...well me. Why was I drawn to romantic stories (both with and without sex)? Why was I likewise drawn to 'revenge' fiction? Why was I never satisfied with what I had, always looking for what I could get next?

I looked at myself and wondered 'What is my nature?' and how much of my nature was caused by external forces that I have/had no control over?

As I walked through my life, I realized that I could draw on it to write a dark story with a protagonist who was even more messed up than I was/am. So, I started. The problem was, I couldn't maintain the 'dark place' I needed to be in to write this. As time wore on, I struggled to write chapters that maintained that dark edge I had found when blocking the opening of the story itself. So, I decided to leave it until I could find that dark place again.

A year later and I've started the re-write. It's going slow, because I want to make sure that I don't let the story get away from me any longer. Plus, I'm not happy with parts of the story itself.

When will I be finished? Not soon, unfortunately. When will I post the beginning of the re-write? I can't answer that either. I've got some story blocking to do and I want to be more careful with my plots and subplots this time as well as with the integrity of the characters themselves.
